Augmented Reality Contact Lenses

AR glasses? Skip this point and move on — the startup Mojo Vision presented and tested the first lenses with augmented reality technology. Thanks to them, graphics and text are embedded in the real world.

Technology

Mojo Lens, like a simple contact lens, is placed on the eyeball. This is the most superportable MicroLED display to date: its diameter is only 0.5 mm with a density of 14 thousand pixels per inch. The lens transmits a monochrome image, which is controlled by eye movement — you do not need to touch the device with your hands or configure it via a smartphone. The developers achieved this effect by installing a magnetometer in the lens. And the built-in gyroscope keeps a steady image even when doing sports.

The model has an Arm Core M0.5GHz processor and is powered by a micro battery located on the outside of the lens. The developers promise that the charge will last for a day — the user will not have to remove the device and worry about charging at an inconvenient time. The charging itself is wireless.

Tests

On June 23, the head of Mojo Vision, Drew Perkins, acted as a volunteer and tested the prototype on himself. He became the first person to ever wear an intelligent contact lens. From this moment, extensive testing of the model will begin.

"To my delight, I found that I could use a compass to navigate in space, view images and use the display as a teleprompter to read a new or already familiar quote," Perkins said after the test.

Future

Mojo Vision hopes that their development will change the lives of people with visual impairments, and allow them to spend less effort on everyday tasks. Mojo Vision's efforts have already been noticed: the company was included in the CB Insights Digital Health rating, which included 150 startups in the field of digital healthcare.

Fitness brands are also interested in AR lenses. Mojo Vision has announced a strategic partnership with Adidas Running, Slopes, Trailforks, 18Birdies and Wearable X. The companies have teamed up to create wearable devices that will help athletes monitor their performance without interrupting training.
